How TCO is Calculated

Total cost includes the initial purchase, all filter replacements during the period, and energy costs for continuous operation.

TCO = Purchase + (Filters x Years/Life) + (Energy x Years)
  1. 1 Start with purchase price
  2. 2 Add filter costs: (yearly months / filter life) x filter cost x years
  3. 3 Add energy costs: watts x 24hrs x 365 x $/kWh x years
  4. 4 Sum all costs for total ownership cost

Cost Saving Tips

Cheap purifiers with expensive filters can cost more long-term
Washable pre-filters extend main filter life
Energy Star models save $10-20/year on electricity
Bulk filter packs often offer 20-30% savings

TCO FAQ

How often do filters need replacing?
Most HEPA filters last 6-12 months. Carbon filters may need replacing more frequently (3-6 months) if used for odors. Check your manufacturer's recommendations.
Are expensive filters worth it?
OEM filters are tested for your specific unit. Third-party filters can work but may affect performance or warranty. Compare TCO with both options.
Should I factor in my time?
If maintenance time matters to you, consider it. Models with longer filter life and easy replacement may have hidden value.
